Interaction: Works by Shawn Ganther and Joshua Zeis
Interaction is an exhibit that examines the ethereal meaning of the question, “Did You Serve?” Artists Shawn Ganther and Joshua Zeis contemplate the obligatory inward examination that this question prompts. Considerations of vulnerability, defense mechanisms, and surrender lead to answers in the form of more questions: What did I serve? In what context do I receive this question?
Shawn “Simon” Ganther (born July 19, 1977) is an American contemporary painter and printmaker who emerged during the veteran artist movement. He served in the United States Air Force from 1998 to 2003 and was involved in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Southern Watch. Shawn graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Media Production, and Studio Art.
Joshua Zeis is an artist based out of Fargo, ND. Outside of his studio practice, he is a ceramics instructor at the Plains Art Museum Center for Creativity, a landscape designer and coordinator for Hebron Brick & Block, and engages veterans, their families, and the public in object oriented dialogue as part of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant initiative through NDSU titled “Project Unpack: Telling Stories, Creating Community”. In 2014, Zeis received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the George Washington University in Washington, DC and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from NDSU in 2011.
